Why protests by men are not heard!

I came across this post (full post quoted below, Original link of the post)

Why do advertisers portray men as idiots?

A new survey has revealed that women are angry with the way men are depicted in TV adverts - so why aren't men complaining, asks Harry de Quetteville

A 2013 ad for Samsung's Evolution Kit was described as 'feminist porn'

Have you ever seen a television advert supposed to represent a “bog-standard household”, which does not feature a mum who is competent and organised (possibly clutching a pencil, looking thoughtful, and then writing something down on a list) and a bumbling halfwit dad who looks game but has the skill-set and sheepish dependency of a puppy which hasn’t learned to control its bladder.
Nope. Me neither.
“TV ad mum” shoulders both the burden of bringing up her children and supporting a man who contributes zero – no housework, no childcare. “Tv ad dad”, meanwhile, can barely be trusted to look after the remote control. He is too busy drinking brightly coloured alco-yuk to help at home; if by some miracle he tries, he will screw things up so comprehensively that, for comic effect, he will be shown trailing a poo-filled nappy around stuck to his shoe.
Having opened the fridge to find it empty, he will then roll his eyes at his wife, who has just returned from the supermarket and is simultaneously juggling three children under three and 14 heavy shopping bags.
It is a total outrage. No wonder us men are fuming at these reductive, stereotypical gender-based images, which bear no relation to the complex reality of the care and responsibility we devote to our family duties. No wonder you’ve seen all those marches, and heard all those mid-morning Radio 4 talk-shows earnestly discussing the fact that we need a more accurate representation of the contribution of modern men to domestic life...
Oh… no you haven’t.

But don’t worry. Thankfully women have done it for us. Thank God. Yes.A recent Saatchi and Saatchi survey has revealed that while women rarely identified with the women portrayed in British advertising, what got them angriest – what got them really steamed up - was the way that adverts portray men.
“The suggestion that dads are clowns, or, worse, sideshows, is the final faux pas that marketers make,” it noted.
Us men. Honestly, eh? We are useless. I mean, there we are, being horribly traduced by the global marketing industry, being bandied around as incompetent, lazy halfwits. And what do we do about it? Naff all. Nothing. Nada. Do we even bother to lift a finger to get insulted or worked up? Nope. Can we be trusted to feel appropriately discriminated against? Of course not. We need women to do it for us. It’s the same old story.
Bloody Typical.
***********************End of Artcle*********************************************

It's not that men do not or have not protested against portrayal of men in a bad light, they definitely have, but those protests usually fall on deaf ears.... but it becomes grave enough to be noticed only when women protests against the same thing(against men being portrayed inappropriately in media)..... this is not a new phenomenon.. it's essentially what the term "Men are disposable" means!.

Here are some protests which men did, against inappropriate portrayal of men in advertisements/media

2) Other protests: In September 2008, Save Family Foundation sent a complaint against a Kitply plywood commercial(The DNA news report also quoted below) to the Advertising Standards Council of India. The ad showed a wife slapping her husband on her wedding day because of a creaking bed. The complaint alleged that the ad promoted violence against men by portraying it as funny. Swarup Sarkar of Save Family Foundation said that violence against women draws strong reactions, but violence against men on public television is ignored. In the same month, Suresh Ram of Chennai-based organization Indiya Kudumba Pathukappu Iyaakam, complained against a Pond's ad which portrayed men as wife-beaters and an ICICI Prudential Insurance commercial which portrayed verbal and economical abuse against men.

DNA Article: Complaint against Kitply

Tuesday, 16 September 2008 - 3:06am IST
They have complained to the Advertising Standards Council of India asking it to ban the commercial.

NEW DELHI: The latest Kitply commercial, in which a wife slaps her husband on their wedding night because their bed made from ordinary plywood kept creaking, has not gone down well with men organisations, who feel that the ad and its likes promote domestic violence. They have complained to the Advertising Standards Council of India asking it to ban the commercial.

“It’s a derogatory commercial, which promotes physical, emotional and financial abuse of men. Kitply may consider it a joke, but violence is not funny; be it against a man or a woman. We are sure you would find the same commercial with reversed roles revolting and so, we urge you to revoke the commercial immediately and take strong legal actions against those who promote domestic violence,” said Save Family Foundation (SFF), an organisation for harassed men, in its complaint.

“It is evident corporates are also responsible for 56,000 married men committing suicides, as they encourage wives to hit their husbands and justify it as alright because it is telecast on the TV,” the complaint stated.

Said Swarup Sarkar of SFF, “There a big hue and cry if a wife is hurt by her husband, but a blind eye is turned when there’s a public display of a wife hitting her husband. Any sort of violence between the spouses is considered illegal and termed as domestic violence or gender violence across the world. Depicting violence on national TV is unacceptable.”

Some groups have also written to Kitply asking it to withdraw the commercial or face legal action and have also called to boycott any product whose ads talk or promote domestic violence. Some women organisations have also joined in the campaign.

Talking to DNA from Kolkata, a Kitply official acknowledged receiving complaints to withdraw the commercial. “We do not feel the ad is offensive. But since there are complaints, we will discuss it in the managing committee meeting this week. It will be difficult to withdraw the ad because we have already tied up with the TV channels. But the final decision will be taken in the meeting,” said Sandeep Sawalka, senior operations manager of Kitply.

Men groups have also protested against a Hindustan Lever Limited, Ponds commercial promoting a scar-removing fairness cream and an ICICI Prudential Insurance commercial.

“The Ponds ad terms husbands as wife beaters and the ICICI ad portrays verbal and economical abuse against men,” said Suresh Ram of Chennai-based organisation Indiya Kudumba Pathukappu Iyaakam.

Are criminal-minded women on the rise! - Article by Smt.R.Sreelekha, IPS

***An open email to Smt.R.Sreelekha, IPS(ADGP, Vigilance and anti-corruption bureau, Kerala)***

Reference: Your article "Karuthamma"maar erunno?(roughly translating into "Are Criminal-minded women on the rise!") . This article is an eye-openingly candid article by R.Sreelekha(ADGP of Police, Kerala). Just wondering how you got the guts to write the truth and what was your motive in writing this, and how 'Malayala Manorama' mustered the courage to run this in the center page!(this article was published in MM, Thrissur edition, 10th page, 19th June, 2013).

Dear Madam,

We at PaSS(Purushavakasa Samrakshana Samiti, NGO, Thrissur) would like to express our heart felt appreciation for touching upon an almost Taboo but necessary topic of "Criminality in Women".

We do not consider this topic very pertinent to our time just because we love bad-mouthing women in general!, but because we realise that this topic needs to be discussed and analysed by our public and authorities in the Law enforcement, Judiciary and people representatives, with a view to properly frame our laws which at present seems to consider that only Men are capable of committing crimes.

In short our laws have to be attuned to the times we live in, and not attuned to the times when these were originally written by and large(most of our legal frame work owes its birth in the 19th century! and very minimal amendments or rationalisation has happened, after this initial frame-work was laid down, to be of any real relief to the citizens of India!)

Our present day laws assume that either 1) A man only is capable of doing some crimes, and not Women or 2) Men do not need the protection of law when it comes to some crimes!.

These are highly gender-biased, heavily-misused and draconic laws, supposedly instituted for the protection of women(when in actual they DO NOT protect women from the crimes they are supposed to protect women from, due to a lethargic law enforcement system and an even apathetic and ineffective judicial system which DO NOT dispense speedy justice and hence people have lost their faith in these very systems meant to protect them from Crime). These laws are mostly used by unscrupulous women/their advisors with oblique motives, to gain undue advantage, to extort, to submit their adversaries by bringing in pressure of false criminal cases against them..  .

So on both counts these women-protection laws are a failure, and we have observed these inadequacies in the legal systems directly ourselves by way of tracking actual cases which flow along this system and never beget any justice any soon!, whether it be victims of crime, or victims of misue of law!... both do not get any justice from the present systems of justice delivery(or the lack of it!).

Going by the spirit of some gender biased law like Adultery(IPC Section 497, where the accused can only be a Man, and never can be a Woman!, why not?), PWDVA(Protection of Women against Domestic Violence act, where the petitioner SHOULD be a Woman and the Respondent SHOULD be a Man!), etc.,. in these laws its assumed that only Men are capable of committing these crimes, and women even if they are involved are to be considered as acting in duress or at the most abettors(only if the partner in crime in NOT and wife, but a Mother in law or a sister in law, in case of DV act cases filed by Wives!).

The other side to this lacunae in law is that law doesn't extend protection Men when it comes to certain crimes like DV act, Rape, Sexual harassment at work place/at public places/at domestic situations, etc (males get raped too, may be the argument is that its in a lesser number, but that is not enough a reason to deny men of protection by the laws of our country).

So your article is actually a good start point for the authorities to take notice of the pressing need of laws which also 1) Protects Males and 2) Protect males from being falsely accused with the misuse of women-protection laws.

In our opition, for this to be ensured we just have to 1) make all our laws Gender-Neutral and 2) build-in a very stringent misuse clause in these very laws(which ensures that the courts take up, Suo Mottu, criminal proceedings against the complainants once the allegations are found false/vexatious.

Given the current state of polity(where majority of the politicians are either corrupt or do not care about the welfare of people) we can at least facilitate "Speedy Justice", but again this is more of a wishful thinking since corrupt politicians would not like justice to be any faster than what's the current state of affairs(scope for delay tactics, scope for subverting justice, scope for putting spokes in the wheel of "spirit of law", etc etc).

What we would like to do in this state of despair(we don't know what would resolve these age old issues of our country, but would like to attempt anything which could help to improve the situation) is to spread awareness of the above issues among the public and then evolve a solution which can then be followed-up tightly and implemented under the watchful eyes of the "actual public" (since we have long lost faith in the so called "people representatives")

We would like to associate with people like you who show the moral character to call a spade a spade and who consciously keeps the fire in them alive which can eventually change the way we all live!.

PS: You had hinted your article whether the rise in criminality is due to childhoods in dysfunctional and traumatising family situations, we confirm that this is the reason why each generation is falling into lower and lower standards of existence. We need to work on this need of Saving Indian Family system, you can read our further inputs in this regard here: http://at498a.blogspot.in/2013/05/a-imperialisticallybeautiful-mind.html

Voice your opinion against the proposed, biased "Protection of Women's Privacy & Dignity bill"

Voice your opinion against the proposed, partisan "Protection of Women's Privacy & Dignity bill"

PASS(Purushavakasa Samrakshana Samiti, NGO, Thrissur. www.mensrights.in) - A group of our members are going to Trivandrum on 30th May, to represent our views and concerns about the proposed "2013, Kerala, Protection of Women's privacy and Decency Act"(for details refer the Bill text), infront of the Subject committee(who has called the public and interested organisations for representing their views, recording their opinions and evidences thereby).

This  Subject committee(No. XIV) is headed by CM of Kerala(refer The constitution of the committeePress Note & Questionnaire for more details. You can also refer "The Handbook on Subject Committees" to prepare yourselves fully)

Other NGOs across Kerala too are attending this meeting with the subject committee in big numbers, this is a big opportunity for us to get our voices heard by the authorities and to prevent misuse of another upcoming law against men!.

Requesting friends to join us in big numbers, so that we can show our concern and seriousness in terms of our numbers too. Contact Gokul: 9633409355 or Sreekumar: 9446326794 for confirming your participation.

Tentative plan of visit: Leave Thrissur by 29th night to reach TVM by 10AM on 30th May. Leave TVM by night on 30th May.

*********************************
PS: Why we oppose this bill 1) Its not gender neutral, Men cannot take recourse of this law, if another man or woman does what is described as 'crime' in this bill 2) There is no misuse clause, as is the case with other widely misused women-protection laws.

"Peedanam"(Harassment/Violation of privacy and dignity of women, as if only women has privacy and dignity!!!) as defined in this bill is open to (mis)interpretation of the complainant, if she "feels" or "feigns" that she was violated(peedippikka pettu enna "thonnal"/ or "naatyam"!) the man is in soup.

There are no checks and balances especially when the 'crime-scene' setting is one to one, and its most probably than not one mans(woman-accuser) word against the another(the accused man). And in this law the word of a women is enough as proof(if she reports that the accused talked about her indecently/threatened to defame her, etc), which makes this law highly biased against men, as is the other women-protection laws which are being widely misused

Nowhere in this world does gender biased laws get implemented in such a large scale than in India. At least now that we know the situation and wide-spread misuse and losses due to such misuse ....why do we allow another biased law to be passed, when we know that its going to be misused!.

Another man facing legal terrorism takes justice into his hands and then gives up on his own life

Another man facing legal terrorism takes justice into his hands and then gives up on his own life. How many more will have to walk this road before justice prevails.

Pradeep Jain was a victim of legal terrorism(false case of IPC 498a) and was denied access to his child, he broke down and went on a rampage, before he took his own life. This can happen to any man faced with similar situations.... we should act before its late. See the original news in TOI quoted below.

JAIPUR: Pradeep Jain, 32, who shot four members of his in-laws family, including his wife, was on a confrontation with his in-laws since 2006.

After his separation from the family, it was a mutual understanding that the baby would be given to Jain. However, the custody of the child was never given to him.

Addressing a gathering of over 2,000 people after he stepped on to the balcony of his sister's house at Devali town, Jain said: "They have been harassing me since 2006. I was fed up with the way the society including police, women's organizations and relatives responded to my worries and problems."

Pointing a gun on his forehead, he threatened that "if anyone dares to come closer, I will shoot myself." In a high drama that lasted for more than two hours, Jain asked the police to bring media persons to take his viewpoint. "Media se baat karwado nahin to maroonga (Bring media persons for interaction or I will die). Following the threat, reporters of various TV channels gave him the microphone.

'Doston, mein patni, pesha aur zameen se pareshan hum, koi meri nahin sunte (Friends, I am fed up with wife, profession and land and nobody bothers)," he said.
Later, thousands were taken aback when they came to know that he shot himself on the forehead.

**************** Another Victim of Legal Terrorism************

Another depressed father, Syed Makhdoom, had committed suicide on 5th April 09, leaving 4 suicide notes and the video appearing below, which was recorded on his mobile. Here he clearly mentions how he was tortured by his wife & in-laws and that he was not allowed to even see his only son, whom he loved more than his life.

There is also a heart wrenching message to the entire society towards the end.

It was Syed's suicide which inspired his friend and film maker Mr.Suhaib Ilyasi to make the film "498a - The wedding gift"

When will this end?, when will the system stop cornering men, forcing them to turn desperadoes

Jail Bharo Agitation by SIF-Mumbai:in News

Times of India News <- Click here for the original article(quoted below too)

Women-centric laws protested
Members of the Indian Family Foundation conducted a peaceful ‘jail bharo’ dharna on Tuesday at Goregaon (W) to protest against the misuse of 498 A and the Domestic Violence Act, which the organisers termed as ‘wifecentric laws’. The event was supported by former Mr India, Aryan Vaid. Several women were also part of the protest and alleged that under the garb of being women-centric, these laws were being used to harass mothers-in-law and sistersin-law. The protesters were taken to a police station and later let off. The protesters said they want the government to set up a ‘Ministry for men’s welfare’.

Jail Bharo Agitation by SIF-Mumbai: Darr ke aage Jeet Hai

On July 6th 2010, Indian Family Foundation and Mashaal (Mumbai based NGOs in the Save Indian Family network) conducted a pioneering Jail Bharo andolan(Flood the Jail Agitation). Pictures here .

This was preceeded by Mr.Ravindra Gangurde's indefnite Dharna against gender biased and anti-family laws which commenced on Febrary 22, 2010 and continued till date, after he took the dharna for 1 week to Jantar Mantar , Delhi.

In Hyderabad All India Men's Welfare Association and All India Forgotten Women's Association conducted a protest in front of police station and submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner of Police. Pictures here , Press Release , Press Release in Support to Mumbai Jail Bharo andolan & Flyers and Placards.

In Bangalore National Family Harmony Society (NFHS) submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner of Police and issued a Press release.

Participating in this Jail Bharo agitation at Mumbai, Actor Aryan Vaid showed solidarity with SIF's cause and gave an empathetic speech. In the times to come more opinion leaders will shun their fear and false-ego and join this just cause for sure.

Lets show Aaryan some solidarity right back, follow him on http://twitter.com/aaryanvaid , do inform him that you are from SIF, you can just reply to one of his tweets. He is on Facebook too, but can't send friend request("too many friend requests for this user" says FB) and hence can't comment on his wall too. But we can send him messages: http://www.facebook.com/aryanvaid?v=wall . His email is : aryanvaid0000 (at) yahoo (dot) com , send him appreciation for doing the right thing - Saving Family ... Saving Nation.

Next time all SIF local groups should do this in sync, its bound to make a huge impact.Iam sure SIF- Mumbai will soon come out with the detailed procedures and to-do list for others to emulate.

I couldn't help but borrow 'Mountain Dew's' Ad punchline "Darr ke aage Jeet Hai"  - yes its always victory behind your own fears, so lets conquer the fear, lets embrace fear and dissolve it, lets use fear to make people sit up and think and then act.

There's always a decision of
Fight or Flight which one has to make, and you win only if u decide to dig your feet deep and fight to finish, so what do you want to do... do I hear FIGHT?

As this Mountain Dew ad says "Bidega toh Jeetega" ... "If you fight, u win".... life is that simple when you think of it!.

So now there are two choices for all of us.... r u ready to fight .... or do you want to DIG YOUR FEET DEEP AND FIGHT TO FINISH

Programme on Custody Battle & legal terrorism

Purushottam's crusade against legal terrorism continues, in this program(in Marathi, by Zee Marathi) his child custody struggles are depicted along with his resistance against legal terrorism.

Summary of this program(for non-marathi guys)

This is a nice programme on Zee Marathi, called "Yaala Jivan Aise Naav". Loosely translated as "This is what is called Life".

The show is hosted by Renuka Shahane. The show is very down to earth, and it aims to put forth, problems suffered by common men. The show is characterized by it simplicity, and its direct to the problem approach,
avoiding all the publicity gimmicks rampant nowadays.

In the episode on 6th February, a gentleman, by the name Purushottam Mahajan, had appeared on the show.

After hearing his plight, everyone's eye's welled with tears, including the ever cheerful Renuka Shahane, even she couldn't control her tears. Even though the court, had granted visitation rights to this father, his wife, didn't allowed him access to his only son. It is more then 10 months, that this father, hasn't even had a glimpse of his only son, whom he so dearly loves. And the Family court hasn't even done anything about it, even when this is a glaring contempt of court.

Such was the father-son bonding, that his little son, had himself, requested the marriage counsellor in court, to increase the visitation time with his father. Whenever this father used to visit his son at his school, his son would point to his friends, and tell them, see " There comes my best friend !".

When his wife was leaving his house, the police had accompanied her. At that time, his son, requested the wife "Mummy, maybe, we shouldn't leave Papa's house". On hearing this the cruel wife started thrashing that 9 year old child, with her chappal. Such was her cruelty towards even her own child that even the Police were moved.

Bowing to his wife's wishes the husband had left his career in films, and took a job in a bank. He helped her start a beauty parlor. He tried to inculcate good values in her. He took her to places like British Council Library, etc, but she was never into it. In the mean time, she developed extra marital relationships with a police officer, which later she used to harass her husband. Not contend with verbally abusing her husband, she used to physically abuse him too. Add to all this she always insulting him, and his parents. In short, she had his life a hell.

Amongst all this it was SIFF, which offered him hope, and gave him the determination to fight against
this injustice. SIFF'ian Ajit Sakharkar helped him a lot.

International Mens Day... for real men

You are Invited on Men’s Day 19th Nov 2009

PIFF (Protect Indian Family Foundation) and IFF (Indian Family Foundation) are celebrating International Mens Day on 19th November 2009 at Azad Maidan(11 A.M to 4 P.M). An awareness vehicle rally, consisting of about 50 motorcycles and four wheelers, starting from Mulund will be converging at Azad Maidan by 12.30 pm.

We are part of the Save Indian Family Movement. This movement was initiated by victims of law who were falsely accused or threatened of law misuse, done with a view to take undue advantage, when a male family member’s marriage fails due to some other reason other than the false criminal accusation.

Male plight have always been the butt of jokes or cartoons and have never been taken seriously as their suffering is taken for granted or ignored. On this mens day we would like to pay tribute to the undisputable hard working taxpayer, Men, who pays approximately 82% taxes to the Government of India. Legal atrocities on us has been termed as “Legal Terrorism” by Supreme Court and recently the government has advised not to rush for Arrests of the Innocent Family of the Groom, as gross misuse of cruel Marriage laws has been observed for years together.

We would like to call for your Unconditional and Overwhelming support in demanding a basic constitutional infrastructure and machinery for Men and his family members.

- Calling the government attention for Introducing a Ministry for Men regarding welfare of mens and related issues.
- Introducing a suo motu (By Default) punishment in the IPC for misuse of any law(especially laws concerned with families) irrespective of gender.
- Creating Machinery for Men to get his serious grievances recorded as crime against men and thus allow generating statistics for men to help understand his plight better.
- Identify his emotional needs as a father and allow a shared parenting during marital dispute.
- Protect the Mother and Sister and other relatives of Husband during marital dispute.

We are only against the misuse of any law on any innocent. We are not against any strata of the society. We are for protection of a vulnerable section in the society. We believe that law should treat everyone equal without blindly favoring / opposing any group.

We look forward for your support and participation in making this International Men’s day a great success.

RSVP.
